NORWEGIAN PEARL CRUISE REVIEW

MEET NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINES MOST INNOVATIVE SHIP

complete with a bowling alley!

NCL's Norwegian Pearl                                                                            Sailing Calendar. Check on rates and dates

The new 93,530-ton Freestyle Cruising ship is the latest in a string of Jewel class ships. Norwegian Pearl features an industry first -- a four-lane 10-pin bowling alley -- and a rock-climbing wall and two top-of-the-ship breathtaking Owner's Suites. Like her sister ships -- Norwegian Star, Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Jewel and Pride of Hawaii -- Norwegian Pearl accommodates 2,466 guests, and she features multiple restaurants, colorful public rooms, family-friendly accommodations and the new Courtyard Villas – in addition to the ship's two gigantic Garden Villas.

Christening Day

The star of the day was the ship's godmother, television personality Rosie O'Donnell.

Over 2400 guests attended the inaugural cruise, and Robert Palmer's music video "Simply Irresistible", played on the big screen in the Stardust Theatre. The Miami-based chamber choir Seraphic Fire performed "Silent Night," and many other holiday songs, along with the music of the Miami Philharmonic. The United States Coast Guard was there to present the colors, as guests and the Seraphic Fire choir sang "The Star Spangled Banner."

Rosie christened the Norwegian Pearl by pulling on a giant lever as a bottle of champagne smashed on the hull of the new vessel.  The band played some lively tunes and colorful streamers fell from the rafters.

Raye & I were onboard for her inaugural cruise. So, is this Norwegian Cruise Lines most innovative cruise ship?

Let's find out......

Our Cruise Review

by Raye & Marty Trencher

Aboard Norwegian Pearl

December 16, 2006

The new 93,530-ton Freestyle Cruising vessel is the latest of the Jewel class ships. Norwegian Pearl features an industry first -- a four-lane 10-pin bowling alley -- and  a rock-climbing wall and two top-of-the-ship beautiful Owner's Suites. Like her sister ships -- Norwegian Star, Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Jewel and Pride of Hawaii -- Norwegian Pearl accommodates 2,466 guests, and features multiple restaurants, family-friendly accommodations and an innovative new style of stateroom -- Courtyard Villas – in addition to her two Garden Villas.

The Norwegian Pearl will sail two seven-day itineraries to the Caribbean (Eastern and Western) beginning Dec. 22, 2006. On Jan. 5, 2007, the Pearl begins five- and nine-day Western and Southern Caribbean itineraries. Ports of call on the five-day Western Caribbean itinerary include Cozumel, Mexico and Belize City, Belize. The nine-day Southern Caribbean cruise includes Roseau, Dominica; Bridgetown, Barbados; Castries, St. Lucia; St. John's, Antigua and Tortola, British Virgin Islands. The ship then does Alaska cruises out of Seattle,  sailing a seven-day Alaska Inside Passage itinerary with calls in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, Alaska; Glacier Bay; and Victoria, British Columbia. In the fall of 2007until spring of 2008, the Pearl resumes her alternating five and nine-day Western and Southern Caribbean sailings with a change in ports of call: on the five-day, Georgetown, and Grand Cayman replace Belize City, Belize; and on the nine-day, Samana, Dominican Republic replaces Roseau, Dominica

Lets Go Bowling! Bowling?

Norwegian Pearl's four lane, 10-pin bowling alley is part of an all new, all-day entertainment, sports bar and nightclub complex called Bliss Ultra Lounge and Night Club. During the day, Bliss is a sports bar with a bowling alley, multiple flat-screen televisions to show sports events, and air hockey, foosball and other arcade games.

Did You Know?

Bowling is one of America’s most popular recreational sports, with more than 69 million participants in the United States. Bowling at sea, what an unexpected opportunity to relax and have fun. Will the ball roll perfectly down the lane? Raye and I tried it out.  Much of the time it did, and some of the time not. The lanes are not for hosting the world bowling championships; it’s just fun your shooting for!  Bowling, drinking, dancing, and laughing with friends and family. That’s a strike every time in our book!

Note: There is a $5.00 per game charge for bowling at sea.

( Notice the professional form and approach to the lanes - We'd enlarge the picture to show you our scores, but it's just too embarrassing )

The entertainment complex during the day is also the perfect venue to host bowling parties for guests of all ages. Gutter bumpers will automatically pop up for kids’ bowling parties – or for adults who might need a little help with their scores. In the evening, in a complete change of mood, Bliss transforms into a high-energy ultra-lounge, with the plasma screens adding video tracks to the non-stop music spun by Norwegian Pearl's own vibe master. The venue is designed in deep reds, blues and purples and appointed with modern furniture including plush seating with high back chairs, big beds ( yes Beds! ) with cushions and pillows and comfortable banquettes near the bowling lanes. A spacious dance floor, a full-bar and midnight-style bowling all add to the atmosphere of a totally unique seagoing experience.

. In addition to the new bowling alley, Norwegian Pearl also features the most family-friendly accommodations and a popular new style of accommodation - Courtyard Villas - which along with her Garden Villas make up the biggest, most luxurious, most innovative suite complexes at sea

  The Courtyard

Unlike others who review cruise ships, we feel it's necessary to experience the new innovations ourselves, so we can pass on our impressions and say with confidence to you... " we've been there done that"!  So the pictures you see here about The Bowling Alley and the rest of the ship are not the cruise lines PR photos , they are our own, the real thing.

What used to be an "exclusive" of Royal Caribbean is no more. The Norwegian Pearl sports it's own rock climbing wall!

Great Fun!

Norwegian Pearl also features another first for the NCL fleet, a rock climbing wall. Constructed at the back of the ship's funnel on deck 14, the wall stands 30 feet in height and 19 feet in width and has been designed with five different climbing routes, each with varying degrees of difficulty.

More Dining Options Than Ever Before
The ship features 10 restaurants, including Cagney's Steak House, Blue Lagoon and NCL's fantastic French restaurant, Le Bistro.

We found the food and service around the ship to be very good. The choices of venues are so many that you will probably dine in the same venue no more than once. Every day it was always something new and different.

In addition, Norwegian Pearl also features these dining choices....

Editors Note: There are cover charges at the most popular venues:

A $15 cover charge per person at Cagney's, $10 - $25 per person at Le Bistro and $20 per person at Teppanyaki.

Summer Palace, a dining room inspired by the grandeur of the palaces of St. Petersburg and the era of Russian Tsars. White and gold ceilings, green marbled pillars and 24 carat gold-coated chandeliers add great atmosphere in this, the ship's main dining room. it seats 558 guests.

Indigo, a contemporary restaurant inspired by a modern boutique hotel clean lines and color combinations, featuring pop art backlit in glass. It seats 304 guests.

Lotus Garden, a modern Asian restaurant featuring popular Asian dishes it seats 108, a sushi bar and a Teppanyaki area seating just 32 in 3 timed seatings 5:30, 7:30 and 9:30 PM.

Mambo's Latin/Tapas Restaurant, featuring hot and spicy Latin and tapas selections; La Cucina Italian Restaurant, a casual Italian eatery reflecting a village trattoria or traditional farmhouse kitchen. It seats 96.

The Garden Café, an indoor buffet featuring prepared-to-cook omelets, waffles fruit, soups, ethnic specialties and pasta; and The Great Outdoors, an outdoor eatery with alfresco dining. It seats 390. Includes a special "kids cafe"  with kid sized tables and chairs, it seats 52.

The Great Outdoors, an outdoor eatery with alfresco dining, it seats 259.

Hi Tech Reservations...

So how do you know what restaurant has seating available at the time you want to dine? The ship has it's own innovative Freestyle Dining Information System. This computerized,  dining reservation system allows you to view the seating status of all restaurants on board so you can make reservations for just what you want. Display screens can be found all around the ship illustrating table availability.

_____________

Editor's Note

These restaurants are so popular, you might be tempted to try out the best ones on the first couple of nights of your cruise. If you do you will likely find that demand is so high that the waiting time may be excessive. We suggest you save the best for last, after most guests have tried them out. Our recommendations: definitely visit Le Bristo French Restaurant and Cagney's Steakhouse. We dined there and found them to be the best dining experiences at sea. Don't worry, they won't run out of food and the wait times will be much more reasonable.

______________

You can relax at one of Norwegian Pearl's bars and lounges, including the Bar Central area, which features a martini bar, a champagne and wine bar, a beer and whiskey bar and a cigar bar.

Shakers Martini and Cocktail Bar, art deco inspired with a large screen behind the bar depicting James Bond inspired graphic silhouettes of funky images from '60s and '70s. Seats 48

Magnum's Champagne and Wine Bar, a French art deco inspired with elements reflecting grand old cruise liner The Normandy. Seats 83.

Maltings Beer and Whiskey Bar, a contemporary bar-lounge with low seating and tables along with mood lighting that complements the backlit artwork. Seats 40

Hot tea, coffee, ice tea , juices and ice water are served with meals; soft drinks, bottled water, and alcoholic beverages are available at an additional charge.

Corona Cigar Club, an art deco cigar club with hand-rolled, premium cigars, cognacs and spirits.

Entertainment

The musical entertainment throughout the ship is varied, from the poolside performances of the Caribbean Wave to the ballroom dance music of the "Norwegian Pearl Show Band" and various piano bar music.

During the daytime there are activities that include language, cooking and dancing classes; trivia contests; lectures and seminars; bingo; art auctions; arts and crafts; volleyball, ping pong, tennis, rock climbing, chess and checkers, bridge and board games. You could attend a wine or margarita tasting, or a martini clinic.

The Stardust Theatre is the place to go for Broadway and Vegas-style productions, comedy and magic.

You will also find live guitar dancing and piano music at a number of locations throughout the ship. Plus theme parties like a sock hop, and disco dance or try out Karaoke.

The Pearl Club Casino offers slot machine, blackjack, roulette and 3-Card Poker, Texas Hold 'em, and Craps.

Smoking is not permitted in the show lounges or indoor restaurants, but it is allowed in the casino, corona cigar club and outside decks.

Recreation

The Norwegian Pearl has two pools, four whirlpools, and a huge bright yellow waterslide.

Body Waves Fitness Center, is open 24 hours. The fitness center is equipped with weight machines, cardiovascular equipment and free weights, plus offers fitness classes. Aerobics and stretch classes are gratis; step, Pilates, yoga and cycling sessions cost extra.

When it's time for relaxation, the ship's South Pacific Health Spa & Beauty Salon is operated by Mandara Spa, which fuses eastern and western-style treatments for optimized massage, facials, and more. The spa is the place to enjoy your favorite treatments but the prices may surprise you.

There is a jogging and walking track, a sports deck with bleacher seating where you can play basketball, volleyball and tennis. There are also two golf driving nets, a shuffleboard court, ping pong tables and a pair of giant sized chess sets.

The Accommodations

Norwegian Pearl offers the most extensive and unique choice of staterooms we have ever seen!

If you are one of the last big spenders,  book one of the impressive Garden Villas, giagantic at 4,400 square feet. These extravagant Garden Villas offer a spacious living room, dining room and three separate bedrooms, each with a private bathroom.  Enjoy your own private sun bed, hot tub and steam room in a private garden, including butler and concierge service.  Each bedroom has either a king- or queen-size bed and a private, luxury bath. One bedroom also features a full bath with whirlpool tub and separate shower. Each Garden Villa also has access to an exclusive concierge lounge and private courtyard area complete with swim-against-the-current lap pool, hot tub, male and female steam rooms and a small fitness area.
Or book a stateroom as part of the Courtyard Villa suite complex. Each villa shares a private courtyard, complete with swim-against-the-current lap pool, hot tub, male and female steam rooms and a small fitness area. These 10 villas also share a private sundeck with sun beds and hammocks. High above everything else are two Deluxe Owner's Suites -- the Black Pearl and the Golden Pearl -- each measuring over 535 sq. ft. with commanding views of the ship and the surrounding ocean and scenery. These suites offer a master bedroom, en-suite bathroom, and dining/living area, together with an ample balcony accessible through the master bedroom.

For families of all sizes, Norwegian Pearl offers a large number of staterooms (including suites and mini-suites) that can interconnect to create a two, three, four or five bedroom area.

Our balcony stateroom on Deck 10 ( 10566 ) came decorated in bright Caribbean colors. Bright blue and fuscia bedspreads, an orange and purple love seat, and blue drapes combine to create the tropical look. Mirrors outside the bath, beside the closet, and above the beds help create a more spacious environment. There are reading lamps over each bed.

The closet space is sufficient  for a week long cruise. You will find an easy to use safe, shelves and shoe storage and a  well-stocked mini bar.

The bathroom, has shell-shaped lamps and sea foam green floor tile. Separate toilet and shower areas.  There is a handy shampoo and soap dispenser, and a retractable clothes line for the wet stuff.  Our thanks to our cabin stewards who never failed to freshen the cabin, turn down the beds and fill the ice bucket. They even made cute animal shapes each night, like an elephants head, out of  towels and placed them in the center of the bed for us to enjoy when we returned after dinner.

There are interconnecting staterooms in a range of categories from standard insides to suites. Some staterooms can be linked to create two- to five-bedroom areas for families and family reunion gatherings.

Editor's Note....

The bedding has been upgraded with thicker mattresses, and better cotton sheets.  These beds are very comfortable. The bathrooms, are ceramic tiled  (nice touch) and the toilet has it's own room, with a door to close for privacy ( sort of )  The standard balconies have chairs and no lounge chair (bad touch).  What you won't find: magnifying makeup mirrors, brand-name toiletries, DVD players or clock radios.  There is a make up table and a hair dryer is provided.

________________

The ship also features Trade Routes Boutiques, located on deck 7 and offering a wide selection of brand name watches, jewelry, accessories and souvenirs.

The Sports Deck contains a basketball, volleyball and paddle tennis court with stadium seating, two life-sized chess pieces and board, two golf driving nets, deck games, jogging track and shuffleboard.

Use the video arcade, the bowling alley and the sports deck with tennis, basketball, volleyball, swimming pools and the rock-climbing wall. For others there is a card room, library, bingo, art auctions, a complete spa facility, shopping or just "chillin" by the pool.

The Internet cafe is open 24 hours a day. You will pay an account activation fee of $3.95, and the base charge is .75 per minute. Stateroom Internet access is available  using your own laptop and an ethernet cable.

The family-centric ship features the Aqua Kids Club, decorated with a cute and friendly tropical sea creature theme, complete with a cinema, nursery and sleep/rest area; computer area and arts and crafts area. The ship also features the graffiti/New York-inspired Metro Center Teen's Club.

Fun for the Entire Family
Pearl has all the elements to be a great ship for families, with plenty of activities for all ages. For kids, there is the Aqua Kids Club, decorated in a friendly tropical sea creature theme with a cinema, a computer center and an arts and crafts area. For the very young, or simply exhausted, there is a nursery and sleep/rest area.

Freestyle For The Family

On the Norwegian Pearl kids get what they want to eat — and a special place to dine: the Kid's Café. Featuring a Kid's Buffet: sandwiches, hot dogs, fruits, vegetables, french fries and cookies. The tables and chairs are just their size. Plus, there is a special Kid's Crew Dinner—just for kids, no parents allowed!

The Kid's Crew program with age-appropriate activities is organized by age group: Junior Sailors (2 - 5), First Mates (6 - 9), Navigators (10 - 12) and Teens (13 - 17). In addition to a play room, there is a kid cinema and video arcade.

NCL at-sea children's programs start as young as 2. Parents can get beepers foto stay in contact. Group babysitting is available between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., and 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. in port; and from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. when at sea. The cost is $5 per hour, per child, and $3 per hour for siblings.

Teens have a great looking, graffiti/New York-inspired Metro Center Teen's Club with a dance floor,  touch-screen jukebox, Microsoft Xbox gaming consoles, disco nights, socials, movies and DJ facilities.

Dress Down.. Dress Up?

Casual dress is at the heart of NCL's "Freestyle Cruise Concept."  Forget about Formal wear. Skip the black tie or dark suit for men or evening gown or cocktail dress for women.  If you don't want to wear them, leave them at home. They are not necessary on this cruise. However, some like to go formal, and the cruise does not discourage getting dressed up.  So, you will find some on your cruise who get all dressed up in gowns and tuxedos. When we dined in the ship's most elegant restaurant, Le Bistro, we had on resort casual attire. It was great!

Here's a Tip about Tips!

You will be automatically billed $10 a day, per person for service staff gratuities. Gone are the envelopes at the end of the cruise. Children ages 3 - 12 are charged $5 per day. However, if you prefer to tip individually, you can fill out a form at reception. A 15% gratuity is automatically added to bar orders, spa services, fitness classes etc.

Wrap Up

The difference between a cruise on the Norwegian Pearl and some other cruise lines is the Freestyle Dining Feature. You get to dine anytime between 5:30pm and 10:00pm, where you want and with whom you want. It is NCL's signature. However, some people prefer traditional dining times and venues. The same wait staff every evening, the same tablemates. Which system do you like, the freestyle dining or the traditional one? After our experience, on the Norwegian Pearl, we'll go Freestyle!   The overall quality of the food and service, especially at Le Bistro the French Restaurant, was much better than what we had experienced on other cruise lines.

Ultimately, there's much about Norwegian Pearl that shines, most notably the dining options, service, a large variety of appealing staterooms, an impressive pool area and fitness center.

Norwegian Pearl

Best Bet....
If you are looking for  superb gourmet dining and service, coupled with fun and very active cruise vacation on or off  the ship, then Norwegian Pearl is for you. This ship's extensive dining options set it apart from the rest , good children's and entertainment options exceed most other cruise ships. Highly recommended for couples. Balconies are very romantic. Families with children; young, active cruisers; and groups of all ages should enjoy this ship.

Tops for....

Couples, Families or family reunions, groups, friends and neighbors cruising, and business meetings
Skip It ...
If you want a luxurious intimate cruise experience around quiet or refined surroundings.
Seniors may find the ship too big and it  lacks a great place to just go dancing. You know, to the tunes of the 40's 50' or 60's. Plus,  you have to do a lot of walking.

Go early and get the best spot!

There are more than enough deck chairs onboard but not near enough around the pools. To get the prime poolside spots get there early in the morning, especially in the smaller adults area. The  hot tubs weren't overcrowded, ( they hold 10 ) as most people have to get out after a few minutes to cool off. They’re open 24 hours, so it’s also a perfect spot to end a night out.

    Carnival’s Conquest Class
Carnival Liberty has shown that the Fun Ships can provide upscale perks for parents, while the kiddies can enjoy Camp Carnival, Club02 and the array of features that bring more kids to Carnival than any other cruise line.

    Crystal Cruises
This upscale line is a multi-generational favorite with families that appreciate luxury, fine dining and onboard lectures. Grandparent-grandchild bookings in Alaska are especially popular.

    Disney Cruise Line
Kudos for not resting solely on the draw of the Disney name. The line has kicked up onboard programming for kids and relaxation options for adults. (And, the first-run Disney and Miramax films in the movie theaters are a huge bonus.)

    Holland America Line
My, what a difference the Signature of Excellence makes. Forget the once-stodgy image — HAL is happenin’ when it comes to family fun. Teens love the new Oasis sun deck areas.

    Norwegian Cruise Line

    Norwegian Dawn
Though she’s not the newest kid on the block at NCL, her whimsical decor, T-Rex kids’ pool area and the tiny buffet table and chairs in the dining room make everyone wish they were a kid again.

    Princess Cruises
The Love Boats have become Family Boats, with the first (and quickly copied) poolside LED jumbo screens, consistently high-ranked kids programs and a new ship featuring an atrium “street cafe.”

Regent Seven Seas ( aka Radisson )
“Luxury Goes Exploring” adds up to adventure for younger cruisers. The line’s Club Mariner program, on selected sailings, offers behind-the-scenes diversions while parents enjoy the pampering.

    Royal Caribbean International

    Voyager and Ultra-Voyager Class
The pulsating beat on the line’s television ads encourages cruisers to “get out there,” and families are doing just that. Ice rinks, rock-climbing walls, Johnny Rockets and some of the largest dedicated kids’ spaces at sea are already kid-magnets.

    Windstar Cruises
The popular choice for honeymooners is just as likely to carry active families that love the ships’ watersports, casual elegance and upgraded amenities in the staterooms
